Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin Review: “Comfortable” In-Ear Hybrid Headphones

The editors would like to thank the Soundmag online store for the kindly provided headphones for review.Whizzer has already managed to “light up” in the circles of high-quality sound enthusiasts thanks to its first two models, Whizzer A15 and A15 Pro, which we have already visited. These were models with dynamic transmitters, detachable cables, interesting designs and very good sound for their money. The new Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin features a hybrid transmitter arrangement, an expected expansion course. The model also has a completely democratic price, both for its characteristics. Let’s see how interesting it turned out.

What is it and why are they interesting?

Previous Whizzer models were dynamic, while the A-HE03 Kylin were the company’s first hybrid in-ear headphones. Creating hybrids is not the most trivial task, and it is not always possible to achieve a harmonious combination of dynamic emitters and boosters at the output. The headphones combine dynamic 10mm beryllium-coated drivers with Knowles dual-frame drivers. The A-HE03 Kylin, like the previous models, is made of metal, in this case an aluminum alloy. The cable is removable, but this time they decided not to use MMCX connectors, but 0.78mm two-pin. BTE carries only.

What’s in the box?

The headphones come in a big and beautiful box with a printing package with pictures of the headphones, a diagram of their internal structure and technical characteristics. Under the soft white cardboard outer packaging there is a hard black box with the headphones themselves and the set. The box contains the headphones themselves, a detachable braided cable, 3 pairs of silicone pads and 2 pairs of foam pads, a round hard case for storage and transport and documentation.

What about the design and construction?

The headphones are made of metal with a barely noticeable fine concentric grinding. We visited relatively neutral dark grays, but there are also brighter blues and reds. On the outside there is an embossed golden Whizzer logo, which is already well recognized by previous models. The very shape of the headset has changed a bit, let’s see how this affected the convenience.

On the end part of the helmet, the seams of the connection of the two halves of the housings are visible. Inside the headphones there are left and right headphones and small compensation holes:

The sound guides are made of copper. This, according to the developers, should improve the reproduction of low frequencies. They are covered with nets and have a fairly large diameter of 6 mm, significantly larger than the standards. There is a ledge around the perimeter for better fixing of the fasteners:

Just above the cable connector, another extension hole is visible. Apparently, they decided to end the experiments with MMCX connectors. And we started to experiment with 0.78mm dual pin connectors. It is not a problem to find a replaceable cable with such connectors on its own, but it is worth considering that these connectors have a different profile. In this case, it is round, there are rectangular ones:

The cable ear hooks are not removable, but they are very well made. They are soft, easily take the desired shape:

The braided cable is made of oxygen-free silver-plated copper (OFC + SPC). It is not too thick, soft and does not tangle. There is a metal cable splitter, a 3.5mm connector is also a metal angled connector. There is a red dot on the right 0.78mm connector to avoid confusing the left with the right:

Like the previous models of the manufacturer, the Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin are of high quality and look very stylish. But, considering the previous models, there are more questions about comfort and fit. More on that later.

How comfortable and what about soundproofing?

We did a really good job on the Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin Kit, but questions remained. On the one hand, they are lightweight, the cases are small, and there is no problem with long-term wearing, they do not cause discomfort, they do not press or rub anywhere. In particular, this is facilitated by extremely successful ear hooks, which perfectly secure the helmet. They have no memory effect, they are not fixed in a certain position, but due to their elasticity it is not necessary:

Anatomy is a very individual thing, as are preferences for landing in the atrium. And if sometimes you come across the most successful options that suit almost everyone (eg MEE Audio models), then the Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin is definitely worth a try before the likely purchase. They did not “fit” me: it was not possible to achieve a deep and comfortable landing with full and third ear cups. As well as the desired level of sound insulation.

Everything is not so bad: it is at a very good level, but I would like to be better, especially since it is quite possible. In the street and in surface public transport, it is quite good, but in the metro, the noise is too much heard.

What does the A-HE03 Kylin Whizzer look like?

As previously stated, the circuit consists of a dynamic 10mm beryllium coated driver and Knowles twin frames. In general, the scheme is familiar, but the question is how it is all constructed. The presentation and general ambience of the Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin sound is very different from the manufacturer’s previous models. The frequency response is a bit V-shaped, which is quite expected. The overall ambience is as neutral and mellow as it gets, which is facilitated by a plentiful amount of bass and somewhat “clean”, albeit elevated, high frequencies.

You have to give it its due, the transmitters are very well coordinated, there are no tangible joints. The low frequencies are dense, voluminous and rich. They sound powerful and massive, with good texture, detail, and generally good speed, although there are more powerful models for this setting. The bass of the Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin creates a subtle “bedroom” atmosphere. The mids sound neutral, but quite melodic and smooth, with enough detail, but without any special “spark” or emotional charge. Calm and measured.

Despite a slight increase in the high frequencies, this is done very carefully and there are no whistles on any composition, the high frequencies do not cut off the ear, but only add the necessary volume and space. The imaginary scene is average, which is typical of most in-ear headphones in this price range: it’s not bad in depth, but rather constrained in width. In general, the character and ambience of the sound is suitable for calm compositions, including jazz, classical, acoustics, and some kind of pop-rock.

For heavier music, especially extreme sub-styles, it’s worth seeing something more “shiny”: the model doesn’t have the necessary aggression and hatred. The headphones have been used with FiiO X5 III, FiiO X3, Hidizs AP200, CEntrance DACPort HD USB-DAC, Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface and LG G6 and Sony Xperia XZ3 smartphones.

In the dry residue

The niche for in-ear headphones under $ 150 is very rich and diverse, and the Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin looks pretty decent in this variety. The company’s early hybrids proved to be interesting and very successful for such a price range. They will delight lovers of calm instrumental music with a pleasant “chamber”, both detailed and even sonorous without unpleasant dips or peaks. Whizzer A-HE03 Kylin is very stylish and is perfectly assembled from quality materials.

Among the controversial points there is still a specific adjustment, which is not suitable for everyone. Among the competitors we can undoubtedly mention the FiiO F9 Pro: they sound a little more pop, V-shaped and less detailed than the heroes of the review. Kinera iDun – slightly lighter and brighter, it seems to me, more suitable for heavy music. And MEE Audio M7 Pro, which are still focused on professional use and not quite suitable for listening to music due to the abundance of low frequencies.
